Frans Oerder

The painter Frans Oerder was born in Rotterdam in the Netherlands in 1867 and came to South Africa in 1890. Though his career can be divided into three phases, the Dutch tradition is clearly visible throughout all his work. He explored all visual elements, from light to colour, and his themes included landscape, portraiture and still-life. His first work in South Africa was to paint houses and telegraph poles. He died in Pretoria in 1944.
